From web developer to building a working text classifier
Starting point
Eight years writing Python for web applications. Comfortable with data structures, APIs, and deployment. Had tried two online ML courses but stalled on the mathematics modules both times.
What changed
The linear algebra in the foundations course is taught through NumPy operations, not abstract notation. The Malaysian dataset project — a text classification task on Malay-language social media data — gave a concrete anchor for the theory.
At the end
Built a working logistic regression classifier from scratch, passed all seven assignments, and received a written assessment record. Enrolled in the deep learning course the following quarter.

From ad-hoc Colab notebooks to reproducible training runs
Starting point
Data scientist with two years running models in Jupyter notebooks. Results were difficult to reproduce, training runs were inconsistent, and she had not worked with distributed training.
What changed
The reproducibility requirement imposed a discipline around seeding, logging, and checkpointing that she had not previously used. The distributed training module on two GPUs in the cluster was the first time she had run a training job that finished in under an hour.

Completed fourteen assignments with code review, published two open-ended project write-ups, and has a portfolio repository of reproducible experiments. Now applying the distributed training approach to her day job.

Shipping an end-to-end document processing pipeline
Starting point
Senior engineer with production experience in distributed systems but no ML deployment experience. Could train a model locally but had not built the surrounding infrastructure: evaluation harness, serving layer, monitoring.
What changed
The residency cohort built a document classification system serving Bahasa Malaysia and English inputs. Weekly design reviews with Kaveh Tan surfaced architecture decisions she had not considered. The post-mortem writing requirement produced documentation she could actually share with colleagues.
At the end
Delivered a working system with data pipeline, evaluation harness, serving layer, and monitoring dashboard. Gave a public technical talk at the residency close. Received a detailed written assessment of her engineering practice.
